What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. Sites can also save information in your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way. This page covers both, and calls them all cookies.

I sort them into two groups: essential cookies, which the site needs and which are always on, and analytics cookies, which I only use if you say yes.

Essential cookies

All but the last are stored in your browser's local storage, never sent to me or anyone else, and stay until you clear your browser data.

Analytics cookies

These help me see how people use the site (which pages they visit, where they click and how far they scroll) and run A/B tests, so I can make it better. They're only set if you accept analytics cookies.

NameProvider and purposeHow long
_gaGoogle Analytics: tells visitors apart.2 years
_ga_BV1RJ7BV99Google Analytics: keeps track of your visit.2 years
_clckMicrosoft Clarity: tells visitors apart.1 year
_clskMicrosoft Clarity: joins the pages you visit into one session.1 day
Mida cookiesMida: shows you the same version of a page during an A/B test and records which version you saw.See Mida's policy

If you don't accept, these cookies aren't set and Mida and Clarity don't load. Google Analytics may still receive basic, cookieless signals (such as a page view) that can't be linked to you.

For more detail, see how Google uses cookies (opens in a new tab), the Microsoft privacy statement (opens in a new tab) and Mida's privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

Changing your mind

You can change your choice at any time with the "Change cookie settings" button at the top of this page. Every page links here from the Cookies link in its footer. If you withdraw consent, the page reloads without the analytics scripts.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. The Information Commissioner's Office (opens in a new tab) explains how.
